Elvis: His Life in Pictures
Published in Hardcover by Abbeville Press, Inc. (November, 1998)
Average review score:

Nearly essential for Elvis fansThis book has several very interesting photos through the years...most, I've never even seen anywhere else; very, very little repetition to other books. Rare photos in the blue '70 jumpsuit with oriental trim, a rare photo in the white '69 karate gi, excellent photo in his '72 Conquistador suit, one of the best pics in the Burning Love red suit, Elvis in his funky western style mod cowboy garb (arriving in Houston for shows at the Dome in '70) etc. etc. Also has by far the best detailed photos I've ever seen of the orange target, bear claw, and aloha suits on display. Very neat room to room Gracelend pics. What a find. I absolutely love this book, among the best values around, too. Long live the King.

English Grammar (COBUILD)
Published in Paperback by Athelstan Pubns (1990)
Average review score:

A new kind of pedagogic grammarThe editors, working within the framework of the COBUILD project, have put together an excellent study aid for advanced learners of English and for teachers of English as a foreign language. The departure point for this book was the 100 million word electronic corpus of texts of the COBUILD project. These texts, representative of the language, were analyzed for frequency of words and for their patterning. The grammar is the second main work which resulted from this initiative by Birmingham University and Collins, the other being a Dictionary. All the examples in the book are taken from this enormous database, and there are 'real' rather than made up to illustrate a point. The other useful feature is boxes of words that behave like the point under discussion. This allows users to 'do things' with the langauge rather than just understand it.

Essential Wavelets for Statistical Applications and Data Analysis
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (December, 1996)
Average review score:

Good book on wavelets and their statistical applicationsThis book is a good introduction to wavelets and their statistical applications. The book gives an elementary introduction to wavelets, including filter-bank interpretations. Not very technically advanced from my point of view (PhD in harmonic analysis), but a good book nonetheless.

The Feminine "No!": Psychoanalysis and the New Canon (Suny Series in Psychoanalysis and Culture)
Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (March, 2001)
Average review score:

Intelligible Marriage ofPsychoanalysis and PoliticsTodd McGowan has made a monumental contribution to our understanding of the canon controversies, and done it with an admirable and astonishing brevity and focus. The readings of particular authors, contextualized with respect to their moment of entry into the canon of literary studies (and with respect to a number of other interesting and provocative issues), are a model of what cultural studies can be, when undertaken by someone with an authentic concern for how literature functions vis-a-vis the social (symbolic) order . What should especially not be overlooked,in my opinion, is McGowan's immeasurable --and, again, marvellously condensed-- contribution to our understanding of the dilemma between essentialistic, rational, enlightenment-based notions of the self versus postmodern dissolution of the self into what are often celebrated by theorists (of all stripes) today under the banner of "multiple subject positions," or some related notion of "discursively-determined subjectivity" (see the last chapter for a terse tour-de-force critique of this dilemma). It must be stressed that McGowan's deployment of Lacanian concepts is not obscured by excessive jargon or mathematical abstractions. He not only wields such terminology with expertise, but makes psychoanalytic concepts intelligible and politically relevant. I highly recommend this excellent book.

A Field Guide to Hot Sauces: A Chilihead's Tour of More Than 100 Blazing Brews
Published in Paperback by Lark Books (October, 1996)
Average review score:

This is a great resourse for hot food lovers!!This book is so great. I leave it in my car and take it into grocery and specialty shops as I look for hot sauces. I have a list of some of the sauces that I would love to find that were rated highly in the book. It is also hilarious reading even if you're not into hot sauces. And you better believe that my bird feeder has cayenne pepper in it now to ward off those pesky squirrels!
